Challenge
Shenzhen Bay RAIL IN celebrates its debut as a landmark TOD urban complex within the Shenzhen Bay Super Headquarters Base, a collaboration between Shenzhen Metro and Vanke Group. This project is a significant component of the grand Ruiyun Center complex, featuring a super tall office building, a hotel, apartments, a shopping center, and a three-line TOD transit hub. The architectural design of the commercial podium and the entire underground space was the responsibility of AICO. Upon assuming this role, AICO evaluated the existing structural completion, including the facade curtain wall. Given the mismatch between the original design and RAIL IN's updated objectives, AICO embarked on a comprehensive redesign to realign the project with its new functional, circulation, spatial, and aesthetic ambitions.
Solution
AICO introduce the concept of "Super Connect," employing multi-dimensional design elements such as a super underground transfer corridor, a three-dimensional urban hub, an expansive rooftop garden, and an interactive super facade. These elements collectively shape a unique urban destination that embraces the future, pioneers lifestyle trends, and seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor spaces.
The project elegantly weaves together the interchange nodes of Metro Lines 2, 9, and 11. Through the system of a dynamic sunken plaza, a lofty two-story transit hall, and the acclaimed "Most Beautiful Transfer Passageway in Shenzhen," we've not only achieved a seamless fusion of retail and urban rail transit realms but also curated a truly unparalleled architectural encounter that commands attention amid the diverse tapestry of transit-oriented development (TOD) ventures nationwide. At the same time, we've reconfigured multiple vertical urban cores to efficiently link the underground public spaces, retail areas, and tower functions. By elevating the office lobby to the rooftop garden level and integrating newly added spaces for F&B, we've crafted a multi-dimensional, ocean-view rooftop garden and a rooftop urban lounge that exudes vibrancy and energy.
The project's facade draws inspiration from the undulating coastline of Shenzhen Bay, with layered, flowing horizontal volumes that possess both sculptural and kinetic qualities. The facade's curved volumes naturally recess, integrating the tower's base and commercial facades in a welcoming manner. The dual-layer curtain wall design, combining ultra-clear glass with champagne gold metallic folds, presents a translucent and refined effect under varying light conditions, especially under nighttime illumination, highlighting the project's upscale and contemporary positioning.
Result
The inauguration of Shenzhen Bay RAIL IN has not only heralded innovative breakthroughs in architectural design but has also pioneered a comfortable, efficient, and smart lifestyle for Shenzhen and the broader Greater Bay Area. As the first super TOD (Transit-Oriented Development) urban complex to launch within the Shenzhen Bay Super Headquarters Base, RAIL IN has emerged as a central beacon of vibrancy, integrating commercial, office, residential, and leisure functionalities. This integration delivers an unparalleled urban experience and seamless transportation connectivity.
