Challenge
This project took the initiative to adapt the historical context and the changing demand of Changchun City. Based on the overall design idea from urban scale, street scale, to human scale, our team has carried out the design exploration of Livon Plaza with fine detailing.
Solution
At the level of urban scale, twin towers at the prominent street corner were set back to create a popular public plaza for the locals. The volumes of the towers were also carefully crafted to generate an elegant urban gateway image under very tight building height restrictions. Changchun is famous for its Western inspired urban fabric with extensive Street Walls and lively shop frontages. At the level of street scale, by showing respect to this tradition, the retail podium of this project was designed to celebrate both continuity and diversity. The various storefronts help to break down the scale of the long podium facade while bringing back the memory of traditional retail streets. At the human scale level, to introduce sustainable design, glass curtain walls were used with careful configuration.
Result
By refining the historical context, activating the plain and homogeneous layout, and optimizing the functionality, we’ve conducted an important exploration for the new generation of Chinese architects to connect the tradition with the future.
