Challenge
The East Shanghai High School project marks a new beginning in the long history and educational tradition of Shanghai High School. Situated beside Dishui Lake, covering an area of 153,934 square meters, the project was initiated at the end of 2020 and opened in the autumn of 2023. Expected to accommodate 2,000 students, this expansion of educational resources further strengthens and promotes the legacy and advancement of high-quality education in Shanghai's prestigious schools.
Solution
The design of the project revolves around the concepts of "modularity, multi-scenario, and openness," aiming to create a flexible, interactive, and inclusive learning space. Building A, the International Arts Center, uses modular cubic boxes to construct a "Magic Box Space-Time," offering students a diverse platform for art learning and exhibition. Its orange perforated aluminum panels extend from the exterior to the interior, creating unique lighting and shadow effects that enhance the space's openness and interactivity. Building B, the comprehensive teaching building, features a "Folding Space-Time" design that integrates teaching, library information, innovation labs, and administrative functions, achieving multi-scenario and modularity in space utilization and functional combination. The layout of inner courtyards, a library, multiple lecture halls, and the connectivity of underground sports facilities enhance the efficiency of space use. The interior design selects sound-absorbing, stain-resistant, and safe materials, including perforated sound-absorbing aluminum ceiling panels, high-durability paint, professional sports flooring, and multi-layer PVC flooring, aiming to ensure environmental comfort and durability while prioritizing student health and safety.
Result
The completion of East Shanghai High School not only provides students with rich educational resources and a variety of learning platforms but also creates an educational environment that fosters academic exchange and meets modern teaching needs through its innovative spatial design concepts. It plays a crucial role in achieving linked management between junior high and senior high schools, innovatively developing resource sharing, curriculum development, and faculty team building.
