Challenge
Situated at the geometric heart of Chongqing's main urban area, within the Yangjiaping business district, this project stands at the nexus of Line 2's Xiejiawan light rail station and the circular line. The primary design challenge was to transcend the established commercial dominance of entities like Times Paradise Walk and New World Department Store. Additionally, Chongqing's unique topography, with its significant indoor-outdoor elevation differences, necessitated innovative thinking in connecting warm and cold zones atop the foundational "linear" circulation path.
Solution
During the building design phase, a national historic site (the Hanyang Arsenal) was serendipitously uncovered on the project site, inspiring a design that venerates Chongqing's Jiulongpo district's urban memory, perpetuating the spirit of Chongqing's cultural lineage. The design distilled five tangible elements from the essence of Chongqing shuttling tracks, layered architecture, suspended roads, a misty climate, and flowing interchanges coalescing into the "Five Senses of Chongqing" concept. This encompasses creating a sensation of movement, layering, suspension, mystique, and fluidity characteristic of Chongqing. Leveraging the site's natural topography, a novel "Cloudscape" spatial form was envisioned. The design narrative extends as two secondary atria, each with distinct styles, converge towards the central atrium, creating a unified spatial experience. Spatial planning strategically locates sensory nodes to manifest five primary spaces: the "Entrance to Mist," "Misty Streets" of the main atrium, "Cloudy Pathway" of the first sub-atrium, "Misty Layers" of the second sub-atrium, and the "Realm of Rain and Mist" within the underground food court. This intricate network of spaces, highlighted by meandering bridges and cascading terraces, imbues the complex with a palpable sense of motion and depth, mirroring the city's layered topography and ephemeral climate.
Result
With the adjacent subway loop's completion, Chongqing CR Land MiXC Phase II disrupts the conventional consumer landscape, heralding a new epicenter of urban commerce. More than a mere commercial complex, it embodies a continuation of local life, resonating deeply with those holding Chongqing's urban tapestry in their memories. The overlapping terraces and urban contours, echoing the city's topography, rekindle memories of traversing Chongqing's multifaceted landscape.
