Challenge
Peets Coffee is founded by Mr. Alfred Peet - known as the ‘Godfather of Coffee’ in California back in 1966. The new Yuyuan Road store next to Jiu Guang Department Store and Jing’an Temple is one of the flagship stores in Shanghai. We wanted to create a social space that reflects the heritage of the brand while leading Shanghai’s coffee culture through design, creating an oasis of calm amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.
Solution
We wanted maximize the interface to the city by using floor to ceiling glazing, to create an open connection to the main attraction - the aroma of the coffee. As a continuation of Peet's Coffee (China) standard, we used green walls and luminous ceilings to simulate the California sunlight to bring the great outdoors inside, while the outdoor seating area overlooks the Jingan Temple. A parametrically designed perforated metal facade is also introduced to work in conjunction with the bespoke lighting to reflect and interact with the surroundings.
Result
The result is a space for Peet’s Coffee that has maintained its ingenuity for more than half a century. The design is an experimentation, interpretation and fusion of the brand identity into a physical space by our team, and provides a new experience for the coffee lovers of Shanghai.
