Challenge
Anchoring the west end of Yango’s 369,000 sqm mixed-use development, this 250 meters tall super high-rise tower will become the new landmark for PingJiang New Town, overlooking Suzhou’s world-renowned historical city center which is only two kilometers to the south. We decided to take advantage of this unique location and design a tower that is more than just a powerful sculptural statement, but also engaging with public life and related to the urban and historical context.
Solution
Known as Venice of the East, canals and water has played a major role in Suzhou’s history and identity. The building’s round edges and staggered glass curtain wall panels are both inspired by water’s flowing form and its shimmered surface under sunlight. The stepped tower massing expresses its multiple programs while maintaining a cohesive exterior language. It is comprised of a luxury five-star hotel and class-A office, with hotel occupying the high zone of the tower to enjoy unobstructed panoramic views of the city. The most striking feature of the tower is the partially cantilevered outdoor observation deck at 200 meters above ground, the highest in the city, with direct connection to hotel’s sky lobby, sky lounge and infinity pool. The public can have a breathtaking bird’s eye view of the ancient city of Gusu from the deck, with the skyline of Jinji Lake New CBD from a distance as the backdrop. This dramatic gesture not only gives this landmark tower its unique identity, but also shows a great way that a super tall building interacts with the city.
Result
Integrating public functions within a skyscraper while creating an iconic gateway image for the city, Yango’s PingJiang tower demonstrates a modern and symbolic interpretation of Suzhou’s culture and history.
