Challenge
We started designing Wuxi’s tallest building, the 360 Center with a clear vision of creating a “Vertical Urban Complex” - which will be a mix of five-star hotel, Grade A offices, luxury apartments and a public observation deck. We seek to bring together and integrate urban transportation with public spaces, and create a seamless connection between the city and this new urban landmark.
Solution
Next to the Railway station, as the gateway of Wuxi, the design of the 360 Center is a direct response to the grand vision we have for the urban context, being at the center of the “Dragon’s Ridge” of the city, we conceptualized the design to be an extension of the “Green Vein” radiating from the ridge. The 3 residential buildings and the super high rise tower are grounded with a sunken square, orientated towards the city to form a landmark. Facing Liangxi creek, we adopted a more organic forms to unify the towers, like a green vein winding upwards - creating the mythological Dragon’s Ridge, an auspicious symbol of importance in Chinese culture. The Dragon’s Ridge will reshape Wuxi’s skyline and integrate with local landscape and culture. We carefully analyzed the elevator system to create a balance of efficiency among the different uses of the complex, and also minimized the floor area required for the core which maximizes the efficiency of the tower. Reinforced trusses were selected to maximize views of the interior space.
Result
360 Center differentiates itself from the traditional skyscraper design and is a reflection of our concept, believes and definition of how a mixed-use skyscraper in the central city should be.
